【市指定天然記念物・地質】 島尻断層崖と海食台
〔しまじりだんそうがいとかいしょくだい〕
美しい珊瑚礁の海にかこまれた宮古島は、地形（カルスト）及び地質面において、特徴ある自然環境をもっている。なかでも島尻断層崖は高さ５．25ｍ、長さ400ｍ以上にわたって第三紀層が露出し断層線・褶曲線・地下水等が発達している。1973年夏、鯨（頭部）や鮫（歯）の化石が発見され、潮間帯に広がる海食台とともに、現在生きている生物（ミナミコメツキガニ Mictyris guinotae など）と過去の生物の遺がい（化石）が採集、観察できる。
日ごろから児童生徒の生きた学習の場であるとともに、この一帯は学術的にも注目されている。なお、海食台は野鳥の休息地でもある。
【Natural Monument (Geology) Designated by the City】 The Fault Escarpment and Abrasion Platform of Shimajiri
Surrounded by the beautiful ocean of coral reefs, Miyako Island has a unique natural environment from the perspective of (karst) topography and geological features. Among these features, the cliffs of Shimajiri is 5.25 m in height, and over 400 m in length, with an exposed tertiary layer, and a development of fault line, crustal fold line, underground water, and others. Discovered in the summer of 1973, were fossils of whale (the head portion) and shark (teeth), and we can observe the present day creatures (such as soldier crab Mictyris guinotae and others) and collect fossils of living things from the past in the intertidal zones and cliff areas.
It is a living field of education for the children and the area has also garnered academic attention. Furthermore, the cliffs are an important resting area for wild birds.

宮古島四周被美麗的珊瑚礁海包圍著，地形和地質上都是具有特色的自然環境。尤其是島尻斷層崖高5.25公尺，長400公尺以上，第三紀地層曝露在外，斷層線、褶曲線、地下水等都非常發達。1973年夏天，鯨魚（頭部）和鯊魚（牙齒）的化石被發現後，可以觀察或採集到潮間帶的海蝕臺和現在的生物（如和尚蟹 Mictyris guinotae 等），以及過去的生物遺骸（化石）。
平時做為兒童學生活生生的學習場所，並且受到學術上的矚目。另外，海蝕臺還是野鳥的棲息場所。
【미야코지마시 지정 천연 기념물・지질 시마지라 단층절벽과 해식대
아름다운 산호초 바다로 둘러쌓인 미야코섬은 지형(카르스트) 및 지질면에 있어서 특색있는 자연 환경을 자랑하고 있다. 그 중에서도 시마지리 단층 절벽은 높이 5.25m, 길이 400m 이상이며, 제삼기층이 노출되어 있어 잔층선, 습곡선, 지하수 등이 발달해 있다. 1973년 여름, 고래(머리)와 돌고래(이)의 화석이 발견되었다. 조간대에 펼쳐지는 해식대와 함께 현재 살아 있는 생물(미나미고메쓰기가이 Mictyris guinotae 등)과 과거에 존재했던 생물의 유해(화석)를 채취, 관찰할 수 있다.
아동과 학생들의 살아 있는 학습 장소임과 동시에 이 일대는 학술적으로도 주목받고 있다. 해식대는 들새의 휴식장소이기도 하다.
